Meet Janna · Grand Rapids, Minnesota

I became my own hardest case. That's how I got here.

Eighteen years as a nurse practitioner. And then my own body stopped making sense… and the answers I'd been trained to give weren't working. Not for me. Not for the women sitting across from me either.

Where this started

My own hormonal hot mess

I knew the textbooks. I'd spent nearly two decades taking care of other people. And then it was my turn… and I couldn't think straight, couldn't sleep right, and didn't feel like myself in my own life.

It showed up where it hurt most. My symptoms affected my family relationships. They left me feeling incompetent at work — and I was good at my job. That's the part nobody warns you about. It isn't just the hot flashes or the weight. It's watching yourself become someone you don't recognize, in front of the people you love.

And then one day I smashed a milk carton on my kitchen counter.

That's not me. That has never been me. But that's where I was — snapping over nothing, in a body that didn't feel like mine, watching myself turn into someone I didn't recognize. It's embarrassing to admit. I'm telling you anyway, because I know how many women are sitting in exactly that kitchen and haven't said it out loud to anyone.

That was the moment I stopped calling it stress.

So I did what I'd tell anyone to do. I went and got checked.

And I got the same thing you probably got.

“Everything looks normal.”

The two words that end the conversation right when it should be starting.

Why I do it differently

Discouraged. Disgusted. Dismissed.

That's how women describe leaving the appointment. I know — because I felt it too.

What usually happens

Often you don't even get a full hormone work-up to start with. Then a “normal” result closes the file — while inside, you feel like you're falling apart. And “normal” labs do NOT mean the same thing as “optimal” labs.

What often gets offered

A sleep aid. An antidepressant. The Pill. Things that may mask what you're feeling without anyone asking why you're feeling it.

What rarely gets asked

What about nutrients? Cortisol? Gut health? Progesterone? Thyroid? For many women, that's where the conversation should have started.

Conventional care has an important role, and I'm not here to attack anyone's doctor. But when your labs are called normal and you still feel like you're falling apart, that should not be the end of the conversation. That's where I start asking more questions… because getting your life back starts with knowing the why. Not covering it up with another prescription.

What changed

Then I found functional medicine.

Discovering the science and power behind functional medicine both delighted and fascinated me. I fell in love with the entire philosophy of it — not managing symptoms one prescription at a time, but asking what's actually driving them.

This is my own experience, in my own words — not a patient's, and not a promise about yours:

It has given me my life back, healed relationships, and allowed me to feel like the intelligent, competent woman I know I am. It literally changed the course of my life.

— Janna, about her own care

That's not a marketing line. That's what happened when someone finally looked at the whole picture instead of one number on one panel… and it's the reason this practice exists. Every woman's body and history are different, so what this looks like for you is something we work out together.

How I practice

No more band-aids

Root-cause care isn't magic and it isn't fast food. It's a real conversation, careful evaluation, and a plan built around your body and your actual life.

01

I listen first

Your whole story — not the version you have to squeeze into a rushed appointment. What changed, when, what you've already tried, and what it's costing you.

02

We look deeper

Hormones, thyroid, cortisol, blood sugar, gut, sleep, inflammation — the kind of evaluation a standard visit often skips, when it's clinically appropriate for you.

03

We build a plan you can live with

Nutrition, targeted support, lifestyle, and hormone therapy when it's right for you. Then we adjust as your body responds.

The clinical part
